I love stories in all forms and believe that gaming is the next evolution of story telling.
First, we had drawings on cave walls, then oral tales with spoken language. Next, came writing that culminated in the printing press. This was followed by still images and onto moving images.
Now, we have gaming; an interactive media that is only just beginning to realize its potential.
I've played quite a few single player games but none have captured my imagination like the Half-Life games. These are the only games I play now. I only play single player games, maps and mods because I enjoy working and succeeding on my own, same as the real world.
PlanetPhillip.Com lists and reviews single player combat-style maps and mods for all the Half-Life series of games. As of June 2010 it contained over 1,000 maps and mods with more than 23,000 comments and over 24,000 screesnhots.
In addition there are gameplay teaser videos, hosted on YouTube, exclusive panoramic images and interviews with modders. Each week there is a poll question designed to generate interesting discussion, along with mod stories, mapping competitions and plenty more.
The readership is well-informed, polite and provides useful feedback to mappers and well as other readers.
The site contains a number of useful guides for new players and new visitors alike.
Podcast17.Com is a weekly podcast, that covers everything related to Valve and its community.
I co-founded the podcast with William in October 2008.
Both William and I shared the hosting duties and I loved appearing on the show.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the time to actively participate.
BetaTestersCollective.Com is a group of players and modders who believe that beta testing should be taken seriously and done systematically.
We believe in communicating feedback in clear and concise language, sometimes supported by images, Source demos and videos.
This website is a place for modders to find suitable and trustworthy testers.
Not everybody is accepted as a tester and generally must be recommended by a current tester.
TF2Updates.Com lists all the updates for Team Fortress 2. It allows readers to find, rate and discuss those updates.
Combine Road.Com is a 5-track parody album, using Half-Life, and all its incredible details, as inspiration. A "parody" is a song that is created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, in this case the Half-Life games. The name is inspired by Abbey Road by The Beatles. I collaborated with Jonathan Lewis in the creation of the album.
ValveCommunity.Com/Net is a website that I started to make finding other websites easier. It doesn't take much time but I have decided to let somebody else move the project forward.
RunThinkShootLive.Com was going to replace PP as the main site but I'm not sure what I will do with it now. Currently, it's a graphical archive of the updates maps and mods on the site.
DM2SP.Com was related to a competition I ran on PP, asking for mappers to convert DeathMatch maps into single player maps. I still feel the idea has merit but the comp wasn't very successful. The domain is now dead.
Half-Life: Ressurection was was a project to finish two Half-Life mods. I was promised all the material but unfortunately it never arrived and what we had just wasn't enough to finish the mods. My thanks go to the developers who supported the idea.
Before I became involved in the Half-Life community, I created 2 Unreal related websites, called UnrealPortal.Com and UnrealWebsites.Net.
In addition to the above, I have been involved in a number of other mod related projects, mainly for story consultation. Not that I am an expert on stories within mods, more because I make a big fuss about the lack of them.
I have voice acted for a number mods, including Human Error, Strider Mountain, Experiment 04 and The Trap. I enjoyed my endeavours greatly, but now I rarely record any new lines.
